30 Day Challenge -Day 26- A Book I Love and Why

Life / Saturday, August 26th, 2017

If you have met me in the last four or so months or know me, you will know that I have recently read the Harry Potter books for the first time and I FELL IN LOVE. Today, however, I will be talking about another book series and how that changed my life when I was a teenager(ish).

If anyone knew me growing up, they know that I literally read most of the books in both my primary school library as well as my local library. Reading gave me a purpose. Being able to read and read the variety of books that I have read, really gave me such a passion to write, to sympathise as well as empathise.

The book series “Spud” by John De Ruit is one of my all time favourite book series. It’s funny, it’s witty, it’s real.

John De Ruit is a South African author who actually lives in the same neighbourhood as me (I have yet to stalk him lol.) John’s style of writing is some of my favourite. He uses real events that have happened and stretches them just a bit further to make them really ridiculous. Spud is about a boy, named John Milton who is going through the natural changes of puberty as well as discovering his sexuality, girls and what it is like to live in a time when South Africa is going through so many different changes. You can sympathise with John as well as the other characters in the book. It left me cry laughing and relating to his experiences even though I am not a boy, not living in apartheid and not in boarding school.

I got the first book from my cousins as they were leaving to Australia. I had just got into contact with them again so the book really does have a special place in my heart.

They have also adapted the books into movies which, as a book lover, you may not enjoy. I, however really did enjoy them. They got Troye Sivan to play John (YAAAASSS) as well as John Cleese. Other noted actors are Caspar Lee (YouTuber), Byron Langley (Glenwood High) and Blessing Xaba (Durban Boys High.)

My makeup lecturer actually did all the makeup on the movies, can you imagine how I felt when I heard that (yes, I freaked out and asked her about it multiple times lol)

Let me know what your favourite book series is and why!

P.S: Harry Potter is coming soon 😉
