AuPair in America Series: 1- Introduction & Facts

AuPair Life / Sunday, March 18th, 2018

Many people know that I was an AuPair in America. I left South Africa when I was 19 to pursue this amazing adventure which has changed my life in so many different ways. I always recommend people who don’t know what to do, to do this program. You get paid and have no overheads (such as paying rent and buy food etc). You get to travel and you get to flipping go to America. What more do you want? I am always being asked questions about the whole process so I thought I would do a series on it. That way anyone looking for information can get it and I don’t have to repeat myself and forget very important information.

This series will consist of about 10 different blogs that will hopefully answer all your questions and if it doesn’t, please send in your questions and I will be sure to answer them!!

Here are some facts about the program:

  1. There are around 11 different official agencies that you can go through
  2. It is a government regulated program meaning the government sets the rules for your year or 2 in the States
  3. You go through a 4 day orientation that normally happens close to New York City.
  4. You are only allowed to work up to 45 hours a week and allowed 1,5 days off a week.
  5. You typically only get $195,75 a week which isn’t a lot but it can get you far if you save
  6. You have many opportunities to meet other AuPairs
  7. You can get some really bad families, but you can also get really good families
  8. If you are not happy, speak to someone!

Most of all, being an AuPair can be fun! It has its ups and downs which I will speak about, but I loved it so much!

Be sure to stay tuned for the next blog that will be talking all about agencies!

  1. You are literally my idol, I only discovered you an hour ago but you’re my idol okay😅 I was just wondering have you aupaired anywhere other than America, do you have any posts with an overview of what you’ve done since you left South Africa? ( I’m going aupairing for the first time in Italy next month!)

    1. Haha hey! I am an AuPair in Holland right now (we can totally meet up lol!) I am going to do a whole series on it like I did with America. Europe and America are completely different with everything. From money, culture, the way they treat you and raise your kids. It is very interesting! I would love to hear your process and everything that you did!

  2. Love this series so much! And gosh darn it, I miss your face so much!!! I hope you’re having a fantastic time in Holland but I can’t wait for you to get back to South Africa so I can give you a big hug!!!
