Now that you got a family and you are feeling all giddy, you have to pack! There are also so many other things you have to do!
Once you have matched, this is the time you will have to apply for your visa, it is a very simple process and you are very likely to get it which is great. The agency helps you through it and really preps you so you don’t have to worry about it!!
Something you should also consider is a gift for your family. Kids are easy, give them candy and they’re okay lol! Something that is super cool is getting them a teddy that represents the country you are from or some sort of candy. If you are from South Africa- Jelly tots; rascals; fizzers; lolly pops. They are all good ideas! Something traditional like earrings, or a bracelet from someone local is super cute and very sentimental! The gift is really optional but I think is so precious and an extra touch.
When it comes to packing, this might be a daunting task. Packing for one to two years is really scary! My suggestion is to pack really minimalist and really, pack for like 2 weeks. It sounds insane, but let’s be honest, it’s America. Clothes are super cheap, you are going to go on a spending spree and the fashion is so different there. Another thing is, if you are coming just in time for winter, I will suggest to buy a coat in America- especially if you are from SA because really, anything you by in SA for winter is just rubbish and will not keep you warm lol!
It is better to pack light, at least your family won’t think you are totally crazy, right?
Another good tip that I was given when packing was to use your carry on as the only suitcase you open when you are at orientation. This is very useful because sometimes stuff gets lost and misplaced which kind of sucks so to avoid all of that, you can use the carry on suitcase and actually store your big suitcase in a keep safe at the hotel.
Some other practical things: bring as little toiletries as possible. You don’t need any extras. Don’t need makeup back ups or “just in case.” You can buy pretty much everything there and it is quite cheap. What is also good is that the hotel generally provides you with shampoo/ conditioner and soap so that is really something you don’t have to pack at all. Something that I did was I put extra money away and left all of that stuff at home so I could buy it there and it worked out just fine!
Something else that you need to consider at this time is to get your international license. You should get it the day before you leave or on the day you leave as it is only valid for a year! Totally annoying!
I think that is all you need to know about packing! If you have any other ideas and suggestions, let me know in the comments!
Until next time!
